Hippuris vulgaris is a rhizomatous aquatic perennial native across subarctic and temperate regions. It grows in slow-moving or still water, along lake and river margins, ditches, marshes, and boggy edges, where its erect shoots with whorled narrow leaves create a distinctive soft, brush-like effect above the water. This species is well suited to naturalistic ponds and wetland gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is best planted at the pond edge or in very shallow water, with the crown at water level or slightly submerged. Small inconspicuous greenish flowers appear in late spring to summer.
